Writing Accountability & NaNoWriMo

While I am gearing up in my head for NaNoWriMo, in truth, I am trying to reestablish more regular writing habits. One of the big steps I am taking, toward that goal, is accountability. Honestly, I suck at it, and on doing anything (especially writing) on any kind of schedule.

I’m working on it.

But hey, to be a writer, you have to write, and I have gotten out of the habit.

I’m not proud of that fact. The truth is, I am all around happier when I am successfully writing, but for too long, I have let life get in the way. Even my husband has noticed, and kindly hinted that I should get back into writing on a regular basis.

That probably isn’t something you ever expected to hear on an author’s blog – ‘Sorry, I’m trying not to suck at writing, right now.’ However, I will lay a solid bet, that all writers have been there once upon a time. The difference between keeping writing as a hobby and deciding, ‘Hey, I’m going to be a professional writer’ is that you don’t get to let a bad day, or bad habits hold you back from doing what you need to do your job. So, I’m working damn hard at not sucking.

State of the Writing

I currently have two books in progress, as of last night. Originally, I was working on Book 1 of a 4 book series, when last night I realized that I had another story that I wanted to do as well. I have over 12,000 words of it already, though it needs a ton of editing. Right now, it is all my messy stream of consciousness, not quite even first draft quality stuff. But, hey, how’s that for doing the damn thing?

Novel: ‘Painting Her World’

12054 / 80000 words. 15% done!

Novel: ‘Untitled – Shifter Series: Book 1 of 4’

204 / 80000 words. 0% done!

Are any of you guys planning on doing NaNoWriMo this year? Is it your first year? Have you ever completed it? (I have participated about a half dozen times since about 2004, but have never completed it. I hope this is my year.)
